Biology 2

Level: 2
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
Recommended Prior Study: No entry requirements
May Lead To: Biology 3
Campus: Hellyer, Smithton

In Biology 2, students will cover three modules:
Module 1: Science Inquiry and Science as a Human Endeavour
Module 2: Cell Biology
Module 3: Multicellular Organisms and Environmental Interactions
In cell biology, students examine the structure of the cell as the basic unit of life and how substances move in and out of cells to support their function. In multicellular organisms and environmental interactions, students learn about the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems and how all organisms interact with the world around them. There is a strong emphasis on practical activities to support learning and students will also look at how science has and does influence society.

Physical Sciences Foundation 2

Level: 2
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
Recommended Prior Study: No entry requirements
May Lead To: Physical Sciences 3. Work where knowledge of science is beneficial.
Campus: Hellyer

This course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge in Physical Sciences to apply basic principles to explain observations of the properties and behaviour of matter and natural phenomena that occur in the real world.
This course prepares students to think scientifically and is an excellent course for students of electrotechnology as well as those with an interest in science.

Transdisciplinary Science 2

Level: 2
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
Recommended Prior Study: No entry requirements
May Lead To: Further study at pre-tertiary level. Work where skills of creativity, collaboration and innovation are valued.
Campus: Hellyer

Transdisciplinary Science Level 2 provides a powerful platform for learners to develop their capabilities, to think creatively, work collaboratively, be innovative and prepare for Level 3 science courses. In practice, most modern and applied science flows between scientific disciplines and is transdisciplinary by nature.
Students investigate a field of science of their own interest through a series of scientific inquires.

Physical Sciences 3

Level: 3
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
TCE Skills: Numeracy
Recommended Prior Study: Abv-L to Wabv standard in Maths and English or CA in Physical Sciences Foundation 2 or Transdisciplinary Science 2. It should be studied concurrently with a pre-tertiary maths.
May Lead To: Essential for Physics 4 and Chemistry 4. Further study at tertiary level or work.
Campus: Hellyer

Students studying Physical Sciences will be introduced to the models and theories used to explain physical and chemical concepts. Students will undertake practical experiments and use their understanding of the physical sciences to examine global issues in our environment and society. This course is required for further study in Chemistry 4 or Physics 4.

Biology 3

Level: 3
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
Recommended Prior Study: Wabv in Science, Maths and English in year 10 or HA in level 2 TASC science courses or SA in Physical Sciences 3. Completion of pre-tertiary maths is recommended.
May Lead To: Further study at tertiary level or work.
Campus: Hellyer

Students extend their understanding of biological concepts. Module 1 covers science inquiry (practical investigation) and science as a human endeavour.

Module 2 covers cell regulation and systems. Students learn about enzymes, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, DNA, and the nervous and endocrine systems.

Module 3 covers continuity and change. Students will learn about how organisms fight disease, genetics, evolution by natural selection and the factors that drive speciation.

This course is recommended for Year 12 students only. It is important for students who are aiming to study in the fields of allied health, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and other biological sciences.

Chemistry 4

Level: 4
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
TCE Skills: Numeracy
Recommended Prior Study: SA in Physical Sciences 3, Maths Methods 3/Maths General 3
May Lead To: Further study at tertiary level or work.
Campus: Hellyer

Chemistry is the study of materials and substances, and the transformations they undergo through chemical reactions. Studying Chemistry provides a student the opportunity to explore key concepts, models and theories through active inquiry of real life applications. Students reinforce understanding of concepts and build confidence in a laboratory setting with regular opportunities to perform experiments.  Students learn about reaction drivers, organic chemistry and electrochemistry.

Environmental Science 3

Level: 3
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
TCE Skills
Recommended Prior Study
May Lead To
Campus: Hellyer

Returning in 2025
Environmental Science students develop their investigative, analytical and communication skills and apply these skills to their understanding of ecology and environmental issues. They can then engage in public debate, solve problems, and make evidence-based decisions about environmental issues in society. There is a large component of field and experimental work, including an extended Case Study, to provide a depth of understanding of ecology and how ecological systems are managed. This course equips environmentally conscious students with an understanding of how the world can adapt to our changing climate.

Physics 4

Level: 4
Hours: 150
TCE Credit Points: 15 pts
TCE Skills: Numeracy
Recommended Prior Study: SA in Physical Sciences 3 and SA in Maths Methods 4 or CA in Maths Methods 3 or HA in General Maths 3
May Lead To: Further study at tertiary level or work.
Campus: Hellyer

Physics attempts to explain the universe in which we live through observation, experimentation and mathematical modelling. It encompasses a wide range of topics from the fundamental particles inside an atom, to theories and questions about space and time.

Students will learn about concepts such as Newton's Laws, electromagnetism, atomic physics, the properties of waves and will be introduced to the particle nature of light.

ACM20121 - Certificate II in Animal Care

Level: 2
Hours: 300
TCE Credit Points: 30+ pts
Recommended Prior Study: No entry requirements

  • sanctuaries
  • pet shops.

The work activities are routine, performed under supervision and within clearly defined guidelines.

You may learn:

  • how to provide appropriate food, water and shelter for a variety of animals
  • how to complete a variety of animal care hygiene routines and assist in animal health care procedures
  • animal rescue first aid
  • how to stay safe and healthy in the workplace
  • the skills employers value in the workplace.

In typical lessons you might:

  • feed, water and provide care for a range of animals
  • visit an animal park, veterinary clinic or RSPCA
  • learn about products and services in animal care
